Meet the Doctor Who Refuses to Stop Prescribing Opioids to Pain Patients

"I take the Hippocratic oath seriously that my job is to relieve pain and suffering," says Dr. Forest Tennant, a California pain specialist who patients from across the nation are flocking to see. Tennant takes the patients turned away by doctors afraid to prescribe painkillers amidst the government's war on opioids. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines. --- Pain patients from across the country who say they can't get the treatment and medication they need in their home states are flocking to a boundary-pushing pain specialist based in West Covina, California. The problems these patients face stem from the opioid addiction and overdose crisis, which results in as many as 91 deaths a day in America, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The media and government have dubbed this problem the "opioid epidemic," and law enforcement agencies have reacted accordingly. Physicians are routinely arrested for overprescribing and running so-called "pill mills," and some states have filed lawsuits against pharmaceutical manufacturers. In 2016, the DEA clamped down on painkillers, reducing the allowed production of opioid medications by 25 percent or more. This year, the CDC issued guidelines advising avoid prescribing high doses over 90 morphine milligram equivalents. Many physicians have even begun to adjust the way that they think about pain. In a New England Journal of Medicine article, one of the pain specialists advising the CDC recommended that pain patients "use coping and acceptance strategies that primarily reduce the suffering associated with pain and only secondarily reduce pain intensity." That opioids are never an effective chronic pain treatment is quickly becoming conventional wisdom, and the American Medical Association has even begun to advise physicians to abandon the pain rating scale when assessing patients. "I take the Hippocratic oath seriously, that my job is to relieve pain and suffering," says Dr. Forest Tennant. "So when I see the AMA decide that they're not going to assess pain, I'm not with them." Produced by Zach Weissmueller. The Government is trying to kill me and you. I was a Police Officer. I was “legitimately” prescribed opiates for a back and neck injury I sustained playing college football. I had been doing everything Societally Correct and boom it all ended. After 10 years of stupor I was just cut off and put in full withdrawal. No taper down at all. I was told that I was the problem. I resorted to alcohol because the pain was so horrible and the psychological trauma that the pills did was devastating. I eventually was put in jail. Went from the American Hometown success story Police Officer to Jail. Finally I discovered an All Natural alternative Kratom. Takes almost all of the pain away and combats the depression and anxiety the pills did to me. I failed to mention I have PTSD because I had a Murder case in which a woman died in my arms and I feel responsible. I’ve been sober for 5 years now and have my mind back to where it was when I was 20 years old. My mind, my heart, yearns to go back to the Police Academy but I can’t. I’m too old, with a history and psychological damage. Now the FDA and DEA are aggressively trying to ban Kratom and I fear that will be my death sentence. Here I am, a former police officer, all for legalizing marijuana because I don’t see no other alternative other than going underground. People say, “Well a Christian shouldn’t being doing this and taking substances“. I’ve been told I’m a sinner and hate God because of all of this. I just shake my head at people like that. Clearly they have no grasp on the reality of what opiates does to a person. It’s a lifelong torture that I can pray and pray to Jesus to heal but the reality is in this flesh we all suffer until physical death. They don’t understand that I did everything “right”. I went to the doctor and did what I was told was okay and now “I hate God”. I will be set free one day when I’m with my Jesus. I can go on and on but it really doesn’t matter because the “Authorities” in Government won’t do anything because it’s all about Big Pharma and Money. I’m at peace with my salvation and death, I’m just terrified of the suffering until then. Yes the decision to start taking the pills was my responsibility and I accept that but once again I did “everything right” at the time and have been left to rot and be labeled.

Unless you have chronic pain, you don't understand what it's like. I could not function at all if I didn't have Tramadol. It gives me some sort of quality of life. It angers me that people who truly need the meds are being given a hard time because of those who abuse it who probably don't really need it. Why don't they take alcohol away? People abuse that, too. Hell, pot is a lot safer than alcohol. The system is so backwards. :/

I am so thankful for my Pain Management Dr who's view is so much like this Dr. I have NEVER abused my meds and never will I would not be alive today, if not for meeting my Dr. I would have taken myself out, sadly. I have battled pain since 2001 when a Dr injured me and almost caused me to die. I am so sad for the patients who don't have access to a knowledgeable Pain Dr. I remember those days and I refuse to merely exist in a life of pain. Hopefully, the CDC and unknowledgeable Drs will educate themselves and realize that there is a huge difference between an addict and a person who needs pain meds to have some resemblance of a normal life.

The government is treating legitimate chronic pain patients and basically calling them drug addicts, scaring off the doctors who prescribe opioids for legitimate pain benefits, and is the reason for the heroin epidemic, which is true!!

As an opiot addict who's been clean for 5 years its as simple as this. Getting off your opiots is to raise your quality of life. If getting off the drugs you take lowers your quality of life then you most likely need to be on them.

I am getting messages on Google about voting tomorrow. I am very patriotic....BUT I have no plan to vote. I'm going to make it clear in my video that I will vote for the PERSONS who will give us a voice. Someone who will start to ask questions. Someone who will find out WHO is 'funding' WHO. Someone who will investigate the alphabet groups...CDC, FDA, DEA, PROP and so on. WHO WILL GIVE US A VOICE? If we choose wrong things can get worse for chronic pain sufferers who are losing their meds...and for the many of us that have already lost our meds. WE are losing our jobs, businesses, the ability to move through life like others. And many are now ending their lives. WHO will listen to us? There are well over 1 mil. pain sufferers now without medications. They have put us in the same pile as addicts and junkies. We will stay there unless we speak up! They are losing their war on drugs. "They" always have. But they found the ONE group that would have a hard time speaking up. US! The pained and sick. People need to research. How many interviews have you seen giving pain sufferers a voice? Think about it. How many times are we really brought up? Start researching what the CDC guidelines is doing to doctors. The doctors now fear us and we fear them. Something needs to change.

Politicians and the media have caused agony for thousands of legitimate patients who took their medicine as prescribed. Meanwhile, the illegal druggies still use their heroin and fentynal and these are the people who are dying of overdoses.

The amount of addicts in this comment section justifying their addictions is sad
john Greene (21 день назад)
People it's not the prescription. Toxicology reports always say it's more than just one drug. Heroin, Fent, benzos etc..The CDC has admitted they skewed the overdose numbers. Any overdose caused by Heroin, fent etc..is lumped into the prescription opioid death count. The CDC came out admiting this in 2018! https://www.acsh.org/news/2018/03/19/cdc-quietly-admits-it-screwed-dishonestly-counting-pills-12717

I went to another country in s.america and buy 7.5mg hydrocodone for 80cents each. 3 a day and I can function... without them I am not productive, need to lay down a lot dont eat good. feel like shit and its all from constant pain. I wish these idiots had my injury they would not deny pain meds... FCK YOU ASSHOLES THAT DENY PAIN RELIEF ONE DAY I WILL SEE YOU AND PISS ON YOU.

The government needs to leave doctors and chronic pain patients alone. It’s very obvious to see the over prescribers and most of those are gone! What do the people want to see. 91 people dying every day from overdoses or 91 chronic pain patients committing suicide every day? High dose opioids are one of the only ways that we pain suffers can have a somewhat normal life! Chronic pain sufferers will become dependent at some point in time. It’s the nature of the beast! I have yet to meet a fellow chronic pain patient that gives a shit about becoming dependent! No one wants to be dependent on anything! Especially a drug that will cause horrible withdrawal after a couple of days. It sucks to know that if something happens and you don’t have your meds, that you will get sick. There’s a huge difference between addiction and dependence. With addiction your brain controls your body. While dependence is your body controlling your brain. That’s overly simplified. Let me try again. With Addiction your brain is consumed with getting high or not going into withdrawal. Your life evolves around getting your next fix. While dependence is just a result of dealing with chronic pain. Your body is dependent but not your mind. I know dependence happens in the brain but it’s different. Dependence is not life consuming like addiction. I wonder, all the time if pain doctors actually think that long term pain control with opiates, won’t lead to dependence. Some of my experiences have been that they are fine with prescribing opiates for years and the day you say dependence, it’s time to drop a patient. I’m sure that lots of people are thinking that As a pain patient, you would communicate issues with the doctor. It’s so much more complicated than that. Once you have a decent doctor that has helped get your pain under control. You don’t rock the boat. Pain patients put up with bad service, possibly unneeded procedures and just about anything else to stay in the good graces of the system. I’m not saying that many doctors are like that by no means but after years of suffering, once you have some control over the pain, you don’t want to rock the boat. My former pain management doctor was arrested on like 8 charges of raping his patients! An unscrupulous doctor can wield a lot of power over chronic pain sufferers.

This is one doctor that believes in his oath. The dea has no buisiness encroaching in the Dr patient relationship. The government does not know what relieves our pain and they don't live in misery each day as chronic pain patients do. The government has made itself the enemy of citizens. It's time the bureaucrats were reigned in and made to leave medicine between the Dr and the patient. It's time or all Drs to stand up and unite against this government idiocy. Speak out for you patients.

This is maddening!! Yes, prescription drugs are being abused, but chronic pain patients are paying the price. My brother-in-law has trigeminal neuralgia (the suicide disease). Imagine having the pain of an abscessed tooth 24/7 365 days a year. He takes massive amounts of opiates plus a cocktail of other medications and he still crawls in a ball and cries from the pain some days. Now people want to take away the very meds that allow him to have some good days? I don’t have the answer as to what to do, but it’s surely not to make chronic pain patients suffer because addicts might get their fix.

I have chronic RA have been on meds for 18 yrs. I have a caregiver now as I can barely walk or use my hands. This manufactured opoid crisis has rendered doctors fearful of losing their license. My doctor had a stroke. I can't find one doctor who will write my prescription. Even my Rhematologist won't write them. Said he could lose his license. Pain management is a joke. Let me be clear, I saw this coming so I started stock piling years ago. I don't abuse my meds. It's a good thing I did or I would be dead now as I have heart issues. Coronary heart disease, 3 way by pass. I'm almost out of meds now. I'm 71 yrs old in terrific pain.

Props to this Dr. So great that he is standing up for what is only right. I too have dealt with chronic pain since 16 when I was in a bad car accident. My pain is not as bad as others but yet it's still there. I was never on them regularly for a extended period of time but I did get a script when the pain became unbearable ( how my Dr. Thought I should take them). My Dr stopped prescribing them and I wasn't able to get help for about 2 years. I had my wisdom teeth surgically removed and received 10 low mg pain pills. 2 months later I had a incident that triggered my back and neck pain once again and when the pain became unbearable i found myself at the ER. The ER Dr asked me why I did not have anymore left from the dental surgery 2 months prior.....I then said how would I? I received only 10 5mg pills specifically for my dental surgery. He then proceeded to tell me there was nothing he could do for me and told me to go home and lie down alternating ibuprofen and Tylenol. I was already in tears from hurting and furious at this point. How dare him treat me as if I was only there for pills which is exactly what he said! He put that I was a pill seeker on my paper!!!! Since then it's been impossible to get any sort of help! They treat every individual like an addict and it's sickening and pathetic for those that truly need and help and relief! I hope this changes but it's not looking good when they have ppl making laws that have never experienced severe pain and cares nothing about the innocent ppl they are holding responsible! God bless❤

I deal with pain every day that would probably cause most people to eat lead. After working a methadone clinic during the AIDS epidemic the last thing I wanted was to get caught up in that hustle, but I am getting to the point with my illness where quality of life is being seriously affected. My doctor is willing to prescribe, but then what happens if I lose my doctor? A clinic, then what happens when too many complaints come in and the clinics licensing is revoked? Do I end up like the VA patients down south who are killing themselves en masse because the state is closing down methadone access and services?

Government needs to stop this bs. People are gonna keep dying the more you limit it. People are gonna get a high and that is for sure. How safe it is, the government is turning people more and more desperate and leaving them to do riskier and riskier things. WTF. Idk if they're only talking bout high dosage. Doctors in my area prescribe a lot and don't care. Whole town is very corrupt. Again IDK if they're only talking about high dose but they give out Percocet like candy here.

I rarely comment here on YouTube or social media sites yet I feel that if someone LIKE ME(IN MY SHOES), doesn't explicitly share my story, THEN WHO WILL? CHANGES IN OUR CULTURE MUST BE ADDRESSED & UNDERSTOOD! Just as HEROES like DR. FOREST TENNANT MUST BE NOT ONLY HEARD & LISTENED TO BUT BROUGHT INFRONT OF OUR LEADERS! OF COURSE I'M SPEAKING OF OUR CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS & SENATE at LOCAL & NATIONAL LEVELS! AS I'M PARAPHRASING what Dr. FOREST TENNANT HAD SAID, ...."WE ARE BASICALLY TAKING THIS WAY OUT OF HAND, & HARMING patients at LEVELS that do more HARM THEN GOOD!"...THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT PHYSICIANS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING TO TREAT THERE PATIENTS! THE HYPOCRATIC OATH STATES JUST THAT!...." DO NO HARM"! THIS OPIATE SO CALLED EPIDEMIC IS POLITICALLY DRIVEN & DRIVEN PHYSICIANS OUT OF WORK TO GOING TO JAIL! ON THE OTHER END OF THE SPECTRUM, IN A NUTSHELL PEOPLE WHO PHYSICALLY CAN'T LIVE SOMEWHAT PRODUCTIVE LIVES ARE LEFT IN TOTAL PERIL! I COULD GO ON & ON THE COUNTLESS PEOPLE WHO ARE AFFECTED IN "RIDICULOUS AMOUNTS OF WAYS"... I just wouldn't have enough room to continue to express myself here! Please if anyone has any questions or would like to speak with me and others that have the same thoughts please reach out! Lastly I like to say I'm on hospice as a 44 year old with very rare cancer called pheochromocytoma and have been fighting this so-called epidemic for years now! in a way I'm lucky that I'm on hospice which is so sad to say, yet there's nothing lucky about being on hospice! This is just the recent thing me being on hospice as opposed to all the Physicians getting out of the business because they can't treat the patients they've had for years. Or they just can't play the game that the government and the insurance companies are throwing their way! As I said I could go on and on and I would love to continue this conversation with anyone at all would like to continue not only speak about the subject with my knowledge and also we could share our knowledge and make some change! I really hope this post finds as many people as possible and can do some good! Be safe and as healthy as possible? REMEMBER IT'S THE HEROES LIKE DR. TENNANT ALONG WITH PATIENTS LIKE MYSELF......."ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN GO ABOUT MAKING THIS CHANGE, 1 PATIENT AT A TIME"! I truly hope deep in my heart that this reaches at least one person, that can continue to reach more and more until we get to where we need to be! That's my goal and I won't rest until my final resting place! that's my total dedication and I won't stop until we can make a difference!

This is a rare man for sure. I wholeheartedly agree with every word said in this video and wish I could see him! my so-called Doctor just dumped me from 360 mg a day to zero. It's hard to describe the agony I've been in these last few months, and the pain I've been experiencing is not from withdrawing so much as just the pain I was in when I began taking oxycontin for relief! I will go to street drugs (heroin) when I can afford to be out of pain for a day or so I guess. I do look at doctors like morons these days, they clearly no longer care about my suffering, and they KNOW I AM SUFFERING, my MRI says "Nerve root compression" in about 7 places from neck to lower spine, besides scoliosis and DJD and an arthritic mass at center spine. they do not care one little bit. so yes, they are not good people. greedy yes.

Pain Management Patients are being tortured by the US Government. Now they are also going after more than just the opioids that work for chronic pain, they are outlawing Kratom, CBD's, anything that helps people relieve pain is being Demonized by the US Government. We, legitimate patients, are being treated like criminals instead of medical patients. They are taking away the medications that work and when new medications come to light they immediately run to Outlaw those as well. They are criminalizing Doctors that are trained and go through years of extra education to deal with pain management. They are putting these doctors in prison, some of them up to 30 years. Just for following the Hippocratic Oath. Just for treating patients as patients, not as criminals. This has got to stop! I am not a criminal. I have done nothing wrong. I did not even cause the situations that caused my pain. We all need to fight for all of our rights all of the time. Stand up people! Less than 1% of chronic pain patients become addicted to their medications. I don't want to take medications. I hate taking medications. Everyone needs to understand that the media is being used to give out horrendous amounts of misinformation on all subjects. No one wants to do anything about it. Stand up people! Stand up for your rights! Stand up for the rights of others!

Good Man! I am a recovering opiate addict. I hate that my problem and misuse of opiates is causing many people with legitimate pain to have to suffer. That's just not right! Why should my irresponsible, abuse and misuse affect those that truly need pain relief? It's absurd! The FDA/Government approves these medications. Doctors Rx'd them, and now Doctors are getting in trouble? Seems to me like the FDA is controlled by Big Pharma and Doctors are being sacrificed as the scapegoat for the opiate epidemic! I applaud this Doctor for doing the Right thing! He's risking his livelihood, and even his freedom, to help those that are suffering. I know this video is older, but I hope the Doctor is still practicing. More Physicians need to follow his lead! It's disgusting that so many people have to suffer. The War on Drugs is at the root of the problem. An outdated Puritan Moral code is what the "War on Drugs" is based upon. It's not about safety and saving lives. Drug legislation harms far more than it helps. Since the early 1970's controlled substance acts were created, has the drug problem gotten better? No. We've thrown billions and billions of dollars at it, with nothing to show for it accept Mass incarceration, a Crack Cocaine epidemic, an Opiate epidemic and now mass Patient Suffering. We need more Brave Doctors like this.

I've been noticing something terrible happening because of this whole opioid crisis Crackdown bullshit..... it's causing a lot of these people who may or may not be in pain and may or may not be abusing whatever opiate they are taking but now it's becoming so hard for them to get that they are ordering these pills from the internet and it's causing a shitload of fake pills and most of them look so real you can't even tell the difference.... there are people now starting to die because of these take pills coming from overseas being made by who the hell knows probably out of there shitty Apartment somewhere and a bad part of town in whatever country..... there has and always will be people who are going to be addicted to opiates and you can't just crack down all of a sudden and expect the problem to go away because now with these fake pills there's a whole new batch of terrible problems.... here in Houston a few years ago there were sections of Houston that had a lot of these doctors that would just give out these painkiller prescriptions and it was getting out of hand I will agree but completely cracking down and making it extremely hard for these people to get their medication is not the answer.... these fake pills are going to be killing people and the people who make them will not give a shit..... all this is doing is making it extremely hard to get the real medications and it's also causing the price of the real ones to go up and that's going to drive people to order these pills from these "online bullshit pharmacies" ..... everybody just needs to calm down with this whole opioid problem it's always been a problem and it will always be there but the people who aren't abusing them shouldn't have to suffer because of the addicts who are abusing their medications

I have been suffering so bad since I have been weaned off all pain meds.I refused to put a pain pump in my belly, and refused regular epidural injections that were offered. I have been living in isolation and crying so bad. I had no problem weaning off meds, but where's the darn treatment for the problems I'm experiencing? I was compliant on my pain meds ! I am an RN that is still in the process of finding an accurate diagnosis. I am legally blind in my left eye from optic neuritis, retinal detachment, and uveitis. I have stiffness, arthralgias, renal tubular acidosis, hypothyroidism, all the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis, NMOSD, or something else, and have been disabled since 2007. Basically, the system has failed me. I was so depressed that I wanted to end my life years ago. The pain and suffering was so bad, until I finally got help, for the pain, at least, about 9 years ago. After I got pain relief, I began getting out again and was so thankful that I could walk without a walker, and I was in my 30's. I eventually began going to aerobics again. Now I'm 42 and my health is a mess. We recently PCS'ed to Texas and they are so strict here. I was weaned off of all pain medicine and they changed around all of my other medications. They wanted to put in a pain pump or do the Epidural injections (I know they get paid more for procedures). I was scared to let them mess with my spine, especially when I already have problems walking, seeing, feeling, and you name it. If I could get someone to really sit down, look through my records, do some serious testing, and diagnose me, maybe they wouldn't have to just treat the DARN PAIN!!! I've been dealing with this since 1995 and it's 2018 and still no diagnosis or treatment. Most DR.'s just want to put a bandaid on you and get you the heck out of their office. I'm gonna be wearing a darn diaper by the time they have any idea of what's going on. What the heck? I'm so sorry.... I'm just very frustrated.... This pain Dr. is helping people that are suffering!!! He deserves an award for doing what is right! Pain is the "5th vital sign". That's what I was taught in Nursing School, or is that not a part of patient care anymore? Are they going to wait for patients to go crazy from pain? Then when enough patients begin to commit suicide (sorry to say that but gee), then maybe the government will wake up and realize that it's not the patients that should be punished for the drug epidemic. It's the drug abusers. I commend this Dr. in California for being a patient advocate, which is what he and I took our oaths to be when we became health care providers. God Bless Him for standing up to the masses.

Its not right. I need 80 mgs of oxycodone to live "normal", however they will only allow 40mgs. So everyday i go through withdrawals, but if i just had a cpl more pills a day, my life would be more easier and fulfilling with my children, instead of always having to say daddy's tired and hurts. Is he taking new patients lol.

Percosets need to be legal for all. Ever since I started using percosets. I’ve become smarter and opened up 3 business with only 3 thousand dollars. All thanks to oxycodine. If them make percosets harder it’s just going to make people use heroin and crack.

Some people actually need the medication to live a normal life and it is only causing the heroin epidemic with doctors cutting people off

I was a victim to the government bullshit. Blew out 3 discs in my lowers back in late 08, and had been taking hydro then percs for years. Two a day at 10mg, and I lived my life working a full-time job and paying my bills. Then my family doctor retired, and the asshole I was sent to didn't care at all about my pain. He never once discussed my case with me, and first thing dropped me back down to hydrocodone. Same mg same amount. So of coarse I started having issues. He refused to write me my percocets citing bullshit reasons of addiction, building a tolerance, things that were already a fact since I'd been taking opiates for years. But the kicker was he'd write that hydrocodone script like it was ibuprophen. He was just afraid of the government looking at him so my problems didn't matter. I ultimately quit going to him, and didn't bother trying to doctor hunt. I went to a clinic to start the long process of getting off the meds. Which I'm still dealing with. Just a fucking mess.

This man is a hero. Just because of people being drug addicts is absolutely not a reason to stop helping people who genuinely need these legit meds.

It's amazing to me the time and money that's thrown away trying to demonize these people throw some of that towards rehab and counseling for the addicts.Leave the people who really need their meds alone.

God bless men & women in the medical field who still dare (terrible to have to use raw words) to prescribe & recommend opiates, & more importantly EFFECTIVE & less addictive opioids & opioid alternatives.

Pain medication doesn't help adhesive arachnoiditis, at least not me . The pain has impacted my cognition to the point I can't function. I'm using my friend's acct , he doesn't care , puts me down and I've never had anyone say one nice word aside from a pain dr I saw once who knew was aa was. I'm humiliated. I can't exercise or be myself , I don't recognize myself . I wish I could die . My poor cats , they need someone to really love them, it's my only shame and sadness in leaving, how evil Am I? I was so good to my cats and now I'm useless. Something is wrong, the pain never stops , I have no future , I can never be happy again . I wish I could have euthanasia and some nice stranger could be there when I go

Good on you Dr. for not being afraid to treat your patients properly!!! Most Dr.'s today are more worried about losing their privileges than the Hippocratic Oath. You keep on going.
