Improving the storage of medicines
Introduction by Pharmacy of an automated storage system -- replacing the traditional medicine cupboard -- has transformed the way medicines are accessed in the emergency area at St. Mary's. Nurses, Paramedics, GPs staffing the Beacon centre and other authorised personnel are now trained in its use. The system eliminates the delays caused by the traditional method of senior nurse held drug cupboard keys and, unlike its predecessor, provides a full audit trail of who took out the medicine and when they collected it. Access, via touchscreen, is by username / password authority and only the drawer containing the required medicine will open. This is one of the entries shortlisted for the 2011 NHS Isle of Wight Awards. For more information visit www.iow.nhs.uk/awards

Reimagining pharmaceutical innovation | Thomas Pogge at TEDxCanberra
By reforming harmful supranational regulations, Thomas Pogge is developing a complement to the patent system to stimulate pharmaceutical innovations that would be accessible, without delay, to poor and affluent patients alike around the world. In this talk at TEDxCanberra 2011, ANU and Yale academic and ethicist, Professor Thomas Pogge outlines an idea that could revolutionise health outcomes and distribution of pharmaceuticals in both the developed and developing world. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations).

Mobile pharmacy at Russells Hall Hospital
Wi-Fi technology is being used to take the pharmacy out of the lab and onto the wards at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley. The days when patients had to sit by their beds and could not be discharged until ward staff had picked up their prescriptions from the pharmacy are in the past. Since the mobile service was introduced in 2008, the pharmacy comes to the patients. Affectionately known as cows (carts on wheels), five lockable trolleys are equipped with medicines and computers so drugs can be dispensed on the wards. If a patient's prescription changes while on the round, wireless technology is used to update the computers. As well as being more efficient than a traditional pharmacy, the mobile service is more patient-centred. It means patients benefit from seeing the pharmacist face to face. 'Seeing patients on a daily basis helps us to gain their trust and often they will tell us things about their medicines that they might not want to tell their doctor,' says Julie Whitehouse, pharmacy technician. 'This means that we can make sure they are getting the right medication.'

How Medicines Work: Drug Actions 2 - Drug Absorption, Elimination, Distribution
This is a sample video. To view the entire video, please visit: http://aus.md/fjFUpg This is a very interesting lecture that explains some of the basic principles underlying pharmacology. It will be very useful to all nurses. In this lecture you will review methods of drug absorption, distribution and elimination. You will learn about the various ways in which drugs are absorbed and factors that affect absorption. Bioavailability is clearly defined and its implication for drug quality, brand substitution and the use of generic medications. In addition to reviewing factors that affect drug distribution, you will learn how therapeutic drug monitoring is used and how protein binding influences distribution. The lecturer explains hepatic metabolic elimination and reabsorption. The objectives of this session are to: - Outline the methods through which the human body absorbs, distributes and eliminates medicines. - Explain what is meant by bioavailability and how this differs depending on the route of administration and the brand of drug. - Learn about brand substitution and the use of generic medicines e.g. why brands such as warfarin should NEVER be substituted. - Why drugs that are administered intravenously do not undergo absorption. - Explain the importance of dissolution on drug action. - Discuss the isoenzymes and protein binding as they relate to drug action. About the Speaker Honorary Associate Professor Louis Roller joined the Victorian College of Pharmacy (now named; The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University) in 1963. Palm Beach Compunding Pharmacy - Rick Upson RPh
We are a specialty pharmacy that supplies people and pets with medicines custom made for them based on a doctor's prescription. We provide medicines that are usually not available from a regular drugstore. These medicines might include specially prepared: • Items that are no longer or never were commercially available. • New forms of a medication. For example, providing a liquid for a patient with difficulty swallowing pills. • Ophthalmics, especially preservative free medicine and high strength antibiotics. • Dosages, smaller or larger doses as needed for people that metabolize medicines at different rates. • Combinations of two or more drugs compounded into a single capsule (which reduces the number of pills taken on a daily basis and may reduce drug costs.) • Intravenous injections or infusions that need preparation in a sterile environment.

Pharmacy HD most effective advertising campaigns Iwankiewicz dm2agency Stacewicz
PHARMACY Making effective advertising campaigns in the pharmaceutical branch requires two-way thinking, because an effective campaign is aimed at two, completely different target groups. On one hand there are patients (medicines from the OTC group), for whom one needs the art of showing emotional benefits because the rational benefits often do not distinguish the product from the competition. On the other hand there are doctors, who need facts, tests and concrete information.Nevertheless, the message and its „frame" must be consistent in case of both target groups With such a formula to prepare a campaign, the agency's team built its experience while cooperating with Polfa Kutno, Polpharma, Virapolfarm or Boots Healthcare Itd (TV, press, radio, BTL, PR, media relations). For many years we have specialized in creative launching on the market and consequent maintaining of the image of pharmaceutical products from the RX group. This task requires huge discipline because very specific, branch media are chosen, because we have to have a consistent vision that can be developed for many years ahead, because the content is very difficult to communicate. We take care that the content does not appear only as a graph and numbers -- which makes the target group, the concern, happy (due to the sales). The following biggest pharmaceutical concerns have trusted us: PLIVA, American Barr group, where we performed global marketing activities for all the medicines of the cardiological department and our solutions were implemented also outside the Polish market. Effective marketing campaigns examples between 2007 and 2009 are available here; Sandoz (division of generic drugs of the Novartis concern), in which we dealt with both RX and OTC drugs (read more); Schwarz Pharma -- a German pharmaceutical company where the members of the agency's team created new trends for the promotion of cardiological, circulatory and pulmonological drugs for 9 years; TEVA Pharmaceutical -- international pharmaceutical holding, for which we made the most effective advertising campaigns that were leaders in their categories: Sumemed -- a modern antibiotic or Atorvox -- a cardiological drug (read more). The output of the agency is also preparing and running particular events. They were particular because they were events which supported the promotion of a drug among doctors and they were aimed at trade representatives of pharmaceutical concerns. Nevertheless, only events which go beyond standards, with a huge dose of creativity contribute to „giving positive energy to the sellers" (social influence marketing). Entering into the concern's structures also allows us to make effective actions in the range of internal corporative communication (internal PR, company's publishing houses, effective social media marketing, activities concerning Personal Development). Apart from the companies mentioned above, the agency's members have added to the portfolio customers like MSD, Beafour Ipsen, Lekam, GlaxoSmithKlime.
