3D Printing Theophylline tablet

01:57
This is a demonstration for fabricating theophylline tablet (commonly used in the management of asthma) using Fused Deposition Modelling 3D printer (Makerbot Replicator 2X). Dr Mohamed Albed Alhnan from the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences alongside his team developed a drug-polymer filament system that can replace the original filaments in a 3-D printer. The team found that the new pharmaceutical “ink” allowed the team to print a challenging tablet design with significant improvement of appearance and high accuracy of tablet weight and dose. Biomedical Science - UCLan

02:15
Biomedical Science involves the study of the scientific basis of health and disease and plays an important role in modern medical care. The biomedical scientist fulfils a pivotal function within the health care system, as he or she is responsible for analysing and interpreting the various causes of disease. To do so, the biomedical scientist requires knowledge not only of basic scientific areas such as chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology and physiology, but also of specialised areas involved in various disease states. The UK delivered course is accredited by both the Health Professions Council (HPC) and the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) as a preliminary qualification for employment in hospital pathology laboratories. The course is primarily designed for scientists wishing to work in diagnostic and research laboratories in hospitals and other medical institutions. However, it will also equip you well for work in toxicological and forensic laboratories, as well as those wishing to pursue a higher degree, or for a career in marketing and management within biomedical related industries. A year-long placement (sandwich) route is also available, and may be beneficial for those students seeking state registration with the IBMS and HPC in pursuit of a career as a biomedical scientist. In addition, students will have the opportunity to undertake studies for one semester in an American university. If you require top-up for a current non-accredited degree it is possible to achieve this via our part-time route, normally this would take one year of study, depending on the requirements decided by the IBMS for individual cases.

Astronomy and Astrophysics - UCLan

02:19
If the vastness of space is something you find fascinating then these subjects will be particularly attractive. Astronomy and Astrophysics are intellectually stimulating disciplines where you will gain an insight into some of the most extreme environments known to humanity. You will investigate the fundamental workings of stars and the universe, whilst developing your own scientific skills and experiences. Our teaching is supported by internationally recognised research within the Centre for Astrophysics. For example, UCLan astronomers lead the UK's involvement in the Southern African Large Telescope - the largest single optical instrument in the southern hemisphere. The degree programmes, especially the four-year MPhys route, provide a strong and mature foundation for astronomical research. The next step would be to push back the frontiers yourself and, on average, 40% of our graduates go on to masters courses or to PhD research both here and in other Universities across the world. In addition, there is a growing demand for scientists who have the ability to make measurements, analyse the results and present the data using the latest technological advances. Governments have recognised that there is a short-fall in science graduates who possess these highly employable skills. Our recent graduates have found employment in industry, government research institutes, overseas observatories, the financial markets, the teaching profession and scientific journalism. Teaching, Learning and Assessment Excellent teaching facilities are provided at our Alston Observatory, set in beautiful countryside overlooking the Ribble Valley. This is one of the largest teaching observatories in Britain, housing a purpose built lecture room/planetarium and optical laboratory. You will be guided in your astronomical studies using a broad range of teaching and learning styles. Emphasis is placed on the Departments on-campus studios and all year groups use the specialist facilities at the Alston Observatory on a weekly basis. The laboratory work will allow you to take your own astronomical observations and includes data analysis and computer programming. Assessment is continuous and varied; it can entail written assignments, presentations, seminars and group studies as well as end of module examinations.

MA Interpreting and Translation - UCLan

02:17
This programme is wholly directed at immediate employability and can almost be described as a vocational training course. In the preparation of this course employers, professional bodies and practising professionals were consulted, the latter also being the course creators. A strong command of English is required, since each of the foreign languages is combined with English. You will be taught interpreting for use at conferences i.e. simultaneous interpreting in booths and consecutive interpreting which is often used at conference dinners or other big international events. You will also be taught interpreting skills and given advice and personal feedback in each lesson. You will be able to record your performance using specialist recording devices which enable you to not only receive personal feedback from your tutors but to further analyse this feedback and listen to your performance later on. During Mock Conferences which are held every other week, you will encounter a wide variety of real-life topics which your lecturers have already undertaken as an assignment. We have a higher frequency of Mock Conference than is standard at UK universities as we and students have found them so beneficial. In these Mock Conferences real life interpreting scenarios are used with changing speakers, differing language combinations and illustrating all the challenges large conferences may entail. Furthermore, you will be trained in the specific skills of high level technical/business interpreting; an area often neglected in conference interpreter training. The scenarios used here are based on real assignments undertaken by the various members of teaching staff on the MAIT, who will later give you not only feedback on your performance but also tips and information on what happened at the actual assignment. http://www.uclan.ac.uk/courses/ma_interpreting_and_translation.php

Asteroseismology - The Songs of the Stars - UCLan

32:50
Professor Don Kurtz from the Jeremiah Horrocks Institute for Astrophysics and Supercomputing, at the University of Central Lancashire, delivers an introduction to Asteroseismology. Asteroseismology is the study of oscillations and pulsations in a star using a collection of observational techniques. These are closely analogous to techniques used in solar structure investigations, and loosely comparable to measuring earth tremors on the Earth. Using these techniques we can indirectly study the interior of stars, and hence develop much better theories for describing stellar atmospheres. Dentistry - UCLan

02:23
As a career, dentistry offers many opportunities for a well-motivated individual. The majority of dentists do not have a career ladder to climb and the opportunity to improve ones working life and salary is determined by individual motivation rather than by competition with peers. Many dentists own their own practices and this allows a considerable degree of flexibility in working practices. The School of Dentistry at UCLan provides state-of-the-art equipment in a brand new, purpose built building. Whereas other schools have been increasing their numbers, the relatively small intake at UCLan allows a more interactive friendly course. In the School of Dentistry at UCLan, students will learn clinical skills in one of the most modern manikin head rooms in Europe, equipped with state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment. The 4 DECs have been equipped with brand new surgeries, tutorial and study facilities dedicated for student teaching. UCLan and the DECs will be linked via IT for learning and teaching, with individual student access to the relevant intranets.

Journalism - UCLan

02:15
Learning about journalism at Preston is a lot like working as a journalist. Our courses offer an experience that is exciting, varied, fast-moving and challenging. Students on these vocationally-orientated courses develop the journalism skills of researching, reporting, writing and production. These practical elements are underpinned by study of the work of journalists, including the development of news organisations, news values, sources, language, regulation, ethics and the uses and influences of news. The Department has a long history in journalism teaching. It has close links with the media industries and professional journalists and editors frequently visit Preston to meet and work with our students. The Department continues to expand and diversify, offering new career-centred opportunities to learn about journalism in all its forms. It is a member of the European Journalism Training Association and has a growing international reputation through its new international journalism programmes and links with journalism schools across the world. These links enable students to undertake foreign visits and exchange programmes. The teaching staff comprises professional journalists who have worked in national and regional media and who are increasingly informing their teaching with individual research. Our students use modern digital TV, radio, online and print production facilities. The majority of graduates seek careers in professional journalism and have succeeded in gaining employment with the BBC, the Press Association, national and regional newspapers, radio and TV stations, and online news providers.

Why UCLan?

02:22
http://www.uclan.ac.uk/ The University of Central Lancashire is going global -- and is evolving every minute of every day. We are now one of the largest universities in the UK with more than 32,000 students, 500 undergraduate courses and 180 postgraduate courses -- and it's not stopping there. UCLan was only created in 1992 but its roots go way back to 1828 and the humble beginnings of the founding of the 'Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge'. From this small acorn, the university has propelled itself into becoming a major player, both at home and across the world. Around 70% of UCLan's students come from the North West and the University is proving to be a vital heartbeat to the region's booming regeneration. It employs 3,000 people, has a turnover of £120m a year and contributes £300m to the regional economy. Further afield, UCLan is making its mark too. In China and Hong Kong, it is the leading UK university in terms of students studying on its programmes in-country. It also has strong links with India, the Middle East, Malaysia, Vietnam and Nigeria. The University is in the heart of the UK's newest city, Preston, and is a key element in the shaping of this exciting city's bright future. It has invested £60m on new campus developments -- including the £15.3m 'media factory' to aid work in art, design and performing arts plus help graduates get a helping hand in business. The University is also getting its teeth into the region's dental crisis with the launch of the £5.5m School of Dentistry and the first School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Lancashire, which both opened in September 2007. UCLan also has its finger on the pulse of research, with £10m recently pumped into boosting research, creating ten major international research areas including, among others, digital technology, diversity and mental health and investment in the Lancashire Business School. And in a UK university first, UCLan has launched a Foundation Degree in Nuclear Decommissioning, in a direct response to the UK Government's pledge to spend £50 billion on the clean-up of the UK's nuclear facilities. People thrive here -- and we are proud that 95% of our students are in employment or further study within six months of graduating. That's higher than virtually every other North West university and equal 32nd across the UK. UCLan continually produces students equipped to thrive in a modern, ever-changing world. You, too, could be one of them.

UCLan wins RFID Innovation of the year award 2011

01:45
UCLan wins BIC/CILIP "RFID Innovation of the year award 2011" Full story: http://www.uclan.ac.uk/news/uclan_library_takes_stock.php As part of its business efficiency drive, UCLan conceived an idea to use the 3M FX book sortation unit to receipt newly acquired books. Working in partnership with Capita and 3M this concept has now been turning into reality. A process that used to take between one and two weeks to make new book stock available to students now takes between one and two hours. The project has produced several successful outcomes: it has enhanced the student experience of the library by making the books available much quicker; it has increased the universities return on investment on the 3M book sorter; it has streamlined the internal business processes and automated a labour intensive activity and finally has improved relationships with suppliers because invoices are now paid more quickly. The BIC/CILIP award is the icing on the cake for the library service.
